Hiya can get you into trouble.
Let me give you three examples…
When we hide from embarrassment… I was talking to a middle-aged woman who borrowed money from her best friend but couldn't pay. “I’ve been avoiding her,” she said, “I don’t want to show my face to her. I’m so ashamed...” But I told her, “The best and most loving thing you can do right now is to face your friend. Overcome your hiya and do the right thing.”
When we don’t want to bother others… One day, while giving a seminar, a guy asked me for advice on how to make his tiny business grow. When he told me what he was selling, I told him, “Hey, you've got to approach those people over there,” pointing to a group of friends who I knew would want his product. “Introduce yourself and give them your card.” But he declined. He said, “Nakakahiya, Brother Bo… I don’t want to disturb them.” I told him, “Do you believe in your product? Do you believe that it’ll help people? You can’t be ashamed of that.”
When we’re afraid of what others will say…. Years ago, I was talking to a teenage girl who got pregnant by her boyfriend. The mother hated the boyfriend and told her to get an abortion. Her mother’s words to her were, “Nakakahiya ka! Ano sasabihin ng mga tao sa pamilya natin?” (Shame on you! What will other people say about our family?) Thankfully, the young girl came to me to ask for prayer and guidance.
Our problem? We’re ashamed when we shouldn’t be, and we’re not ashamed when we should be!
We should be ashamed of sin. And we should allow shame to push us towards God.
Don’t hide. Don’t run away. Instead, take charge! Ask yourself: In this situation, what is the wisest thing to do?
Have a glorious Feast today!
May your dreams come true,
Bo Sanchez
Don’t Hide—Take Charge!
And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.” (Genesis 3:10)
"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven." (Matthew 5:16)
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9)
For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid… (2 Timothy 1:7)
Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in that name. (1 Peter 4:16)
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes…. (Romans 1:16)
Personal na Pagninilay
1. Are you ashamed of sin? Does shame push you to go to God?
2. Are you ashamed of things that you should never be ashamed of? How can you take charge during moments like these?
