Pakikisama ...

I married Zenaida, my sweetheart, after 7 years of getting to know her and loving her. I was only 23 years old at that time.

Several months after the wedding, when the wedding euphoria had worn off, I was back to my old self. Once a week, I would allocate time for my 'barkada.' It wasn't that bad as others might imagine it but it did put a strain on my relationship with my wife.  I reasoned to her that I married you and so you must believe that I love you much much more than my barkada.... otherwise I would have married them! (Haha!)

Years later, I had not really shaken off my barkada attitude,  As I was successful in my corporate career, I had some extra cash that Zenaida didn't know about.  Whenever any of my barkada or friends would need to borrow money, I would willing oblige. I would always tell Zenaida that it is in my nature to help friends in need. I just can't help it!  That's what "pakikisama" meant to me.

When I retired, I had much more money from my retirement package.  I went on business and I also lent some of that money to my friends. Then things started to turn sour.  I lost a lot of money from my business and I was the one who needed help this time....I turned to collect from my friends but sadly they turned their backs at me.  I wasn't even able to collect some of those which they owed me.
They forgot about "pakikisama"....  At that low time in my life, I was really hurting.  Fortunately, I saw God's hand in all these and the community where I belonged provided me with much support.  Actually, it was Zenaida, my true and loyal friend, who really stood by me and encouraged me to not lose faith and stand up again.... I guess she knew about real "pakikisama" all along.

True friends are those who share  with you not just your triumphs and successes.  They're there for you most especially when you're down or up against the wall.... Try JESUS!  He'll be there both when you're up and when you're down.  He's the one who knows "pakikisama" true and through....
Be very blessed at the Feast!
